Dental Emergencies: Yes, They Happen

Dental Emergencies: Yes, They Happen

December 30, 2019

A lot of what happens with tooth and jaw health progresses relatively slowly. With good brushing habits at home, and twice yearly checkups and cleanings, you might never experience a dental situation that needs immediate attention. And yet, things can happen. If you experience a quickly developing dental situation that is causing you pain, discomfort or a feeling of urgency, it is good to know that emergency dental appointments are available in Merrimack, NH, so you don’t have to figure things out alone.

When A Restoration Comes Loose

If you have a cap or crown on a tooth, it can happen that the restoration comes loose. This might be when eating a particularly sticky or chewy food, or you might never know exactly what happened to cause the shift. If you find yourself in this situation, please call our helpful office team immediately. We can advise you on placing the crown temporarily back on, or invite you to come in to be seen right away, so that we can restore it for you.

Tooth Chips or Cracks

Tooth chips and cracks can happen in the blink of any eye. One minute you are eating pecan pie, or a handful of mixed nuts, and the next thing you know, you feel an uncomfortable crunch and a rough spot. Luckily, small chips and cracks can often be mended almost invisibly with bonding or contouring. Once we see you and examine the damaged area, we may be able to bond special dental resin to fill or reshape the missing area. Another option is contouring the tooth, by gently smoothing the damaged area to blend it in.

A Tooth That is Knocked Loose or Knocked Out

When a blow to the jaw causes a tooth to be loosened, please call our office immediately. It may be possible to save the tooth, and allow the root to reestablish in the jaw. It the tooth is knocked out completely, we may still attempt to reimplant it, or we can advise you on restorative options, such as a dental implant, to fill the gap and keep other teeth from shifting out of alignment.
