How to Help Your Child Care for Their Teeth

February 6, 2020

Before your child can start caring for their teeth on their own, it’s largely on you to do it for them. However, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s not something you can do for them forever, and as you go through the motions, you should also be teaching your child what you’re doing, and why. In fact, learning the basics of good dental hygiene are the foundation for every other step you can take to care for your child’s teeth. In addition to brushing and flossing their teeth every day, we take a look at a few other important factors of their dental health education.

Educate them about good hygiene

Sometimes, cleaning your teeth and your child’s teeth can seem like something you need to hurry and get done so you can get ready for the day, or get prepared to go to bed. However, it’s important not to rush through it, and instead, talk to your child throughout the process. Explain the point of brushing teeth, the importance of making sure to cover every single spot, and how excited it will be when they’re grown enough to do it on their own!

Stock the kitchen with healthier snacks

Clean teeth are an important focus of good hygiene, but there’s more to it than just brushing and flossing. For example, excessive sugar and other unhealthy foods and beverages can significantly increase your child’s risk of developing cavities and other concerns. Don’t just tell your child that sugar is bad; introduce them to tasty, healthier choices by stocking your kitchen with them. Trade sugary fruit juices and acidic sodas for flavored water, chocolate milk, and tea. Get rid of the candy and give your child fruit and sugar-free yogurt to satisfy their sweet tooth.

Make regular visits to the dentist’s office

You can teach your child to do all they can at home to care for their teeth, but without regular care and attention from the dentist, all of the effort might not help your child avoid concerns. It’s important to get your child accustomed to visiting the dentist’s office as early as possible. Until your child is old enough to begin their own schedule of checkups and cleanings, bring them with you to yours so they grow used to the environment.
