Children’s Dentistry

Caring for children’s smiles takes an especially personable and compassionate approach. Not only are their teeth and oral structures still developing, but children may also be more likely to feel anxious or nervous about visiting the dentist. At our office, we’re proud to provide high-quality care to our young patients in a warm, welcoming, and fun environment. We also offer several preventive and restorative options to help ensure that your child gets a good head start on enjoying a healthy adult smile for life.

What Is Children’s Dentistry?

Pediatric visits

We recommend bringing your child to our office for the first time between the ages of 2-3 years old, or by the time all 20 primary (baby) teeth erupt, whichever comes first. After the initial visit, we’ll recommending scheduling routine checkups and cleanings for your child at least once every six months. If necessary, we may also suggest additional preventive treatments, such as fluoride treatment or dental sealants.

Fluoride treatment

Fluoride is a topical treatment that we can apply to the surfaces of your child’s teeth. Fluoride, a mineral, is able to bond to the mineralized enamel that surrounds and protects healthy teeth. If your child’s tooth enamel has grown weak, then fluoride treatment may be able strengthen the enamel and reduce the risks of a cavity developing.

 Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

SDF is an FDA-approved, safe and effective treatment for tooth sensitivity and decay. After we apply SDF to a tooth’s surface, it permanently hardens to the to tooth’s surface. It not only stops tooth decay, but also offers protection for healthy teeth crowns and roots against new oral bacteria.  The use of SDF also helps children and elderly patients avoid the need for more extensive tooth decay treatment.

Dental sealants

Dental sealants are made from biocompatible, BPA-free acrylic, and are thin layers that are painted onto the chewing surfaces of your child’s teeth. The sealants create a barrier that stops food particles and oral bacteria from settling into the spaces on the teeth’s chewing surfaces. This prevents the formation of plaque in hard-to-reach places and significantly reduces the risks of cavities.
